Man of Sorrows
During His life on this earth, Jesus had many encounters with death. One of the most famous is recorded in the Bible in the book of John, chapter 11, when He raised a man named Lazarus from the dead. In verse 33, we read that Jesus was "deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled" as He saw the dead man’s sisters, Mary and Martha, grieving their brother's death. In verse 35 we learn that Jesus wept.
The Bible says that Jesus was a "man of sorrows and acquainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3). In the midst of the sorrow at Lazarus' tomb, Jesus did not offer shallow sympathy. He pointed to Himself as the one true solution to death: "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies" (John 11:25).
